H lived in mainly coastal towns as his father was a naval clerk and therefore became familiar with the scenes reflected in Great Expectations.

The Great Expectations explores different major themes including the social classes during the Georgian era (Tredell 189). Other themes include ambition, self empowerment, as well as the crime. Crime is depicted throughout the novel and crime as a theme comes into greater effect when Pip discovers that his great benefactor is a convict (Dickens 112).
